Mosquito Select White (2007)

North Toronto Mosquito Select White (2007) Team

TRYOUTS

The Mosquito Select White Team will hold open try-outs in late March or early April of 2017 for all players registered in house league for the 2017 season. The time and location of the tryouts will be posted in early 2017.  Tryouts may include an indoor component at a local training facility.  Participating in select will require a serious commitment from players and parents (more on this below).

Players will be selected on the basis of:

  • attitude and coachability;
  • level of commitment to attend practices, games and tournaments to ensure consistency of

play and development as a team; and

  • athleticism and skill

No previous rep or select level baseball experience is required. All players will receive equal consideration.  Team selection shall be at the sole discretion of the Head Coach.

TEAM SCHEDULE:

The 2017 schedule will consist of practices, games (home and away) and tournaments.  There will also be a summer break where there will be no baseball activities (depending on approval of convenor).

Practices - Will commence in late April or early May (weather dependent) and will be held on Saturday’s 1:30-3:00pm at Memorial field (Yonge/Eglinton).  This will not conflict with any Minor Mosquito housel league games.   There will also be a practice on Sunday evenings until the select season starts at the end of May. At least one additional weekly practice will be added when house league breaks at the end of June.

Games – The team will participate in the Toronto Baseball Association select league, playing other select teams in Toronto. The regular season will consist of approximately 10 games starting in late May and running to mid-August. Home games will take place on Sunday’s at 6:30pm at Viewmount Park (Allen/Lawrence-Eglinton). Away games will be at various locations in the eastern portion of the city. The team may also schedule pre-season exhibition games or make-up games for rain-outs as required. Typically, there are no games scheduled on the Canada Day or civic long weekends.

Tournaments – The team expects to participate in 2-3 tournaments in May/June

Summer Break – There will be a 2-3 week break in July or early August, this is dependent on the convenor being able to grant a black-out request. Players' attendance at overnight camp and family vacations should be scheduled around this period.

HOUSE LEAGUE PARTICIPATION

A player's commitment to NT Select requires participation in the NT House League schedule that plays games twice a week in May and June.   During the overlap between the select and house league seasons, NT Select will practice once a week and play once a week. That means between the 2 teams, players will have at least 4 baseball events a week, including weekends in May/June. During tournament weekends, select players will be exempt from House League commitment if the schedules overlap. After the House League season ends in June, the select team will practice twice a week and play once a week.

TEAM COMMITMENT:

An important aspect of the select program is commitment to the team and it is expected that those players chosen to play will honour this commitment. Players are expected to attend all select practices, games and tournaments scheduled as well as their house league games. The NT Select commitment is a serious one. If you are signing your child up for this experience please be sure you are committed to the other players, parents and coaches that will be taking this step with you. The aim is to build a team that practices and plays together consistently.

A maximum of two missed games will be accepted before a player is demoted to call-up status unless there is a valid reason, on determination of the coaching squad. There is the same expectation for tournaments. All players must be available to attend the Toronto Baseball Association (TBA) city playoffs August 18-20 and if the team qualifies, the Ontario Baseball Association (OBA) provincial championships September 1-3(Labour Day weekend).

If your child is expected to be away for extended periods in July/August or if you will be unable to meet the minimum attendance commitment, please do not attend the tryouts.

Please note there is a significant financial commitment as well. Depending on sponsorship, player costs are expected to be approximately $1,500 in addition to league fees, primarily to pay for training, uniforms, equipment and tournaments entrance fees.
