Minor Rookie

The North Toronto A’s invite all players born in 2009 who are interested in competitive baseball to try out for the 2017 North Toronto A’s Minor Rookieball (2009) Rep Team.  Team selection shall be at the sole discretion of the Head Coach.

In keeping with the NCCP Baseball Model of Long Term Athlete Development (LTAD), these young athletes fall into the FUNdamental and Learn to Train categories.  We will be emphasizing skill development, proper training and the importance of having FUN!  Our program will focus on creating a fun and positive experience, developing young competitive baseball players, and instilling a love of baseball with heavy emphasis on teamwork.

Saturday September 10th: 9am - 11am

Sunday September 11th: 9am - 11am

Monday September 12th: 6pm-8pm

Attendance at all of the tryouts is not required; however, attendance impacts the coaches’ ability to fully evaluate each player.  The coaches’ may at their sole discretion add a fourth tryout, if deemed necessary.

Be prepared for tryout times and dates to get delayed due to weather.  We will do our best to run the tryouts on the days and times above.

 

Please arrive at least 15 minutes early for the first try-out to register. Wear baseball appropriate clothing.

Team Selection - Players will be selected on the basis of:

1)       attitude and coachability;

2)       level of commitment to attend practices, games and tournaments to ensure consistency of play and development as a team; and

3)       athleticism and skill

 

No previous Rep or Select level baseball experience is required.  All players will receive equal consideration.

 

TEAM SCHEDULE:

Winter Training – The team will practice indoors with coaches 1-2 days a week starting in January through to mid-April.  Day of the week will be determined based on availability of facility and with the least amount of conflicts amongst the team.

Practices – Practices will commence in late April or early May (weather dependent). The practice schedule will not be finalized until field permits are obtained in early spring however based on prior years the team expects to practice Saturday and Sunday mornings in April/May/June.  During August there may be an additional one or two weekday practices depending on game scheduling. All practices will take place at Oriole Park or Davisville Park.

Games – The team will participate in the Toronto Baseball Association and will also play an “interlock” with teams from York-Simcoe Baseball Association.  The regular season will consist of 18-22 games starting in early May and running to mid-August.  The team will have one home game time slot per week, the day of the week for home games will be selected in early 2017 based on coaches’ availability. Away games can be any day of the week, except Saturdays.  Home games take place at Oriole Park or Davisville Park.  The Head Coach may also occasionally schedule exhibition games or make-up games for rain-outs at times. There are no games scheduled on the Victoria Day, Canada Day or Civic Holiday long weekends.

Tournaments – The team expects to participate in 3-4 tournaments, with 2-3 in May/June and 1 in late July/early August.

Summer Break - The team will take a 3-4 week break during July.  Players’ attendance at overnight camp and family vacations should be scheduled for this period. The length and timing of this break will be determined at a team meeting and will best fit the availability of families.

EXPECTATIONS:

A minimum 75% attendance is expected for the practices, games and tournaments.

Please do not attend the tryouts if you will be unable to meet the minimum attendance commitment.

Players are expected to attend all practices and games scheduled in August, including on weekends. 

All players must be available to attend the Toronto Baseball Association (“TBA”) city playoffs on August 18-20, 2017 and the Ontario Baseball Association (“OBA”) provincial championships September 1-3, 2017.

Please note there is a significant financial commitment as well. Depending on sponsorship, player costs are expected to be $1,400-1,800, primarily to pay for training, uniforms, equipment and tournaments. Team equipment fittings will take place in January 2017.

For those that do not make the Minor Rookieball (2009) Rep team, NTBA is also fielding a Select team at the Rookieball age level (i.e. birth years 2008 & 2009). The tryouts for the Select team will be for those registered in the NTBA house league program and will take place in the spring of 2017.

ABOUT THE COACH:

Justin is currently a high school teacher in the Toronto Catholic District School Board. A graduate of Blessed Cardinal Newman High School, he was a member of a TDCAA championship team and gained an OFSAA berth, later he took home a school baseball MVP award. Upon graduating high school, Justin played 4 years with the York University Lions baseball team and then 1 year with the OUA Champion University of Toronto Varsity Blues where he also completed his Bachelor of Education degree at U of T's faculty of education: OISE. Currently, Justin is in his 4th season coaching the  U of T Varsity Blues baseball team as well as running his high school's baseball program. During the 2015 season, Justin was an assistant coach for the North Toronto 18U Midget Elite League program. In 2016, his teams won a TDCAA (high school) city championship and Toronto Baseball Association “AAA” Minor Rookieball city championship. Justin is going into his 2nd year as head coach of the North Toronto A’s Minor Rookieball Rep program.
